How to protect yourself from coronavirus

©IKIDANENIPPON

The Wuhan coronavirus outbreak is a new illness and it has become a plague, especially in Japan and China.
The number of coronavirus carriers is increasing across the world, and today we introduce preventive actions you can take to protect yourself from the virus.

How is the coronavirus spread?

Scientists are still evaluating how the virus spreads from person to person, but other similar viruses tend to spread via cough and sneeze droplets.
When coronavirus carriers cough or sneeze, they release droplets of saliva or mucus. These droplets can fall on other people, and can be either directly inhaled or picked up on the hands and transferred when touching other person or other things, causing a spread of infection.
It can also be spread through droplets landing on surfaces on public facilities like seats on buses or trains or desks in schools or offices.

How to protect yourself and others from coronavirus

Below are the preventive actions you can take to protect yourself and others from the virus.

Wash your hands

Hand-washing is the first line of the defense.
Wet your hands with clean, running water and apply soap.
Wash your hands, including the backs, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Rinse and dry your hand completely.
Spray hand sanitizers to disinfect your hands.

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing

Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing.
Throw the tissue into the trash can and wash your hands.
If you don’t have any tissues, cough or sneeze into your elbow.

Use face masks; preferably N95 masks

Face masks, especially the N95 masks, offer some protections as they block liquid droplets.
But since they don’t cover your eyes, you still can get infected by the virus if it gets into your body through the eyes. The best mask to use against coronavirus is the N95 mask, but if you can’t find any, purchase a mask with the word “ウィルス (virus)” on its package.

Gargle and rinse your mouth

Gargle and rinse your mouth using salt water or mouthwash to kill the germs inside your mouth before and after going outside.

Avoid the crowd

Since coronavirus spreads from person to person, it is better for us to avoid crowded spaces and places.

Seek early medical help

See your doctor as soon as you can if you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
Also share your travel history with your doctors.
